What is a decibel?

A decibel (dB) is a unit used to measure the intensity of sound. The scale is logarithmic, meaning that a 10 dB increase in sound level corresponds to a tenfold increase in sound intensity (though to the human ear, the perceived difference in loudness is only twofold).
